Want to know what I have learnt in over 10 years of working with clients? A complete overhaul never works long-term. It is tempting to say, ‘I will start on Monday!” But it is this mindset that often sets people up to fail.
The Myth of the Perfect Start
Too many people wait for the “perfect time” to start their fitness journey. But here’s the truth: The perfect time doesn’t exist. The “all or nothing” mindset often destroys progress before it even begins. Instead of waiting for the right moment, the secret to success is starting where you are today and building incrementally from there.
The Strategy of Habit Stacking
Rather than attempting to change everything at once, we like to teach the practice of habit stacking—small, manageable adjustments that you can add to your existing routines. This concept, popularised by James Clear in “Atomic Habits,” emphasises the power of achieving 1% better each day. It’s about identifying a current habit you already do each day and then stacking your new behaviour on top. For example, you might start doing a few stretches while waiting for your morning coffee to brew. This links your new habit to an existing one, making it more likely to stick.
